Should We Be Afraid of Friedman’s Rule?

چکیده

Should one think of zero nominal interest rates as an undesirable liquidity trap or as the desirable Friedman rule? I use three different frameworks to discuss this issue. First, I restate H. L. Cole and N. Kocherlakota’s (1998, Fed. Res. Bank Minn. Quart. Rev., Spring, 2–10) analysis of Friedman’s rule: short run increases in the money stock—whether through issuing spending coupons, open market operations, or foreign exchange intervention— change nothing as long as the money stock shrinks in the long run. Second, two simple Keynesian models of the inflationary process with a zero lower bound on nomianl interest rates imply either that deflationary spirals should be common or that a policy close to the Friedman rule and thus some deflation is optimal. Finally, a formal baby-sitting coop model implies multiple equilibria, but does not support the injection of liquidity to restore the good equilibrium, in contrast to P. Krugman (1998, Slate, August 13). J. Japan. Int. Econ., December 2000, 14(4), pp. 261–303. CenER, Tilburg University; Humboldt University, Berlin, Germany; and CEPR. c © 2000 Academic Press

Using New Keynesian models, we compare Friedman’s k-percent money supply rule to optimal interest rate setting, with respect to determinacy, stability under learning and optimality. First we review the recent literature: open-loop interest rate rules are subject to indeterminacy and instability problems, but a properly chosen expectations-based rule yields determinacy and stability under learni...

‘Is the Taylor Rule the same as the Friedman Rule?’z

Our objective in this paper has been to provide more theoretically coherent microfoundations for monetary policy rules in response to Lucas’s (1976) critique of econometric policy evaluation and, more importantly, to show that the Taylor rule can be derived via Friedman’s k% money supply rule. A key di¤erence with respect to the traditional IS-LM framework, is that, the aggregate decision rules...

Generalizing the permanent-income hypothesis: Revisiting Friedman’s conjecture on consumption

Friedman’s contribution to the consumption literature goes well beyond the seminal permanentincome hypothesis. He conjectured that the marginal propensity to consume out of financial wealth shall be larger than out of ‘‘human wealth’’, the present discounted value of future labor income. I present an explicitly solved model to deliver this widely noted consumption property by specifying that th...

A Note on Flagg and Friedman's Epistemic and Intuitionistic Formal Systems

We report our findings on the properties of Flagg and Friedman’s translation from Epistemic into Intuitionistic logic, which was proposed as the basis of a comprehensive proof method for the faithfulness of the Gödel translation. We focus on the propositional case and raise the issue of the admissibility of the translated necessitation rule. Then, we contribute to Flagg and Friedman’s program b...

A two-stage stochastic rule-based model to determine pre-assembly buffer content

This study considers instant decision-making needs of the automobile manufactures for resequencing vehicles before final assembly (FA). We propose a rule-based two-stage stochastic model to determine the number of spare vehicles that should be kept in the pre-assembly buffer to restore the altered sequence due to paint defects and upstream department constraints. First stage of the model decide...
